Teaching Plan

A good plan is like a road map. It shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.

Three days I had the opportunity to observe in mathematics classes at Tapaz Central Elementary School (TCES), and now it's time for me to shine. That's what the teachers at TCES, my kind and lovely mentor, Maam DiƱa, and my buddy, Reynante, said. I already observed how teachers in TCES teach in class, and it was my turn to practice teaching. So, before that, besides having to prepare myself, I also have to prepare a lesson plan and learning materials in order to teach optimally.

As what I explained about TCES that they follow Department of Education (DepEd) regulation in Philippines Education, whether its buildings, facilities, infrastructures, and many more, TCES teaching system is also following the DepEd teaching curriculum, namely K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum (K-12 Curriculum). In this curriculum, Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) is provided sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. So, because of this, I have to follow what TCES follows, that is, my lesson plan and teaching later have to follow K-12 Curriculum.

The lesson plan type that I made and used is based on the example that Maam Grace showed to me. This type of lesson plan consists of five important parts, namely learning objective, learning context, learning experiences, evaluation, and assignment.

The first one is learning objective. As the name itself suggests, this section is the target that must be achieved after the learning process ends. Since I got "Multiplying Mixed Decimals with Factors Up to 2 Decimal Places" as my topic for teaching, I searched in DepEd Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) guideline to know my learning objective and its code.

In that topic, my learning objective is multiplies mixed decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places, and the code is M6NS-Ie-111.3. In fact, teachers only need to follow the learning flow in each class to determine the learning objective that will be taught in the next class, because the learning objectives here are hierarchical, which means those are arranged logically, continuously and systematically. This is the learning objective in my lesson plan.

Next, we have learning context. Learning context is the set of circumstances that are relevant when someone (in this case pupils) needs to learn something. This section consist set of all of basic informations for learning, those are topic of learning, references that teacher and pupils use during learning process, all of learning materials, and also values of learning. Topic is the subject of a discourse or part of a discourse that pupils will study. In this case, my topic that I will teach is "Multiplying Mixed Decimals with Factors Up to 2 Decimal Places". The references that pupils use for learning are Mathematics 6 Module and 21st Century Mathletes Textbook Grade 6. Materials are anything that teacher use during teaching. I will teach using modern and traditional materials combined, those are manila paper, Canva Presentation, TV monitor, laptop, flash cards, and balloons. Values are also important for pupils to possess, such as helpfulness, collaboration, orderliness, etc. In my lesson plan, I put helpfulness as my values of learning. This is the learning context in my lesson plan.

The third part is learning experiences. Learning experience is a strategic approach to teaching that involves reworking the flow of a curriculum to focus on end goals and objectives. It also emphasizes using multiple teaching methodologies to engage learners of different types. Social participation, collaborative, engagement, multimedia games, and other forms of teaching are employed to provide a more holistic experience. In this lesson plan, the learning experiences consist three things, those are preparatory activities, developmental activities, and application.

Preparatory activities are used to make pupils ready in any aspect to receive new knowledge that they will learn at the next step. Because my topic is related to multiplying numbers, I will use multiplication flashcards as a drill to prepare the basic knowledge that pupils need. After that, I will invite pupils to review at what lessons they have learned in the previous class, in my case, pupils learned about multiplying decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places. I will give pupils three questions related with the previous topic. I will use reward method here to encourage pupils to answer the questions. The last thing is to motivate pupils. In giving this motivation, I have to take a real world context related to the moral value I chose previously, helpfulness. So I chose the agricultural context because this is also related to Tapaz Municipality. So, this is what preparatory activities in my lesson plan looks like.

Developmental activities are the process of developing pupils' knowledge in terms of learning new material that is being taught by the teacher. This activity looks like the core of the learning. This is where the new material that will be studied begins to be taught from start to finish. Starting from the presentation, I will provide a problem with the same context as motivation, agriculture, which is related to the topic being studied. This problem will then be discussed with pupils on how to solve it. After that, all the steps that have been explained will be summarized into one so that it is easy for pupils to understand.

After the presentation, continued by fixing of skills. In this step, I will give three questions to pupils who are willing to answer on the board. These questions are used as a benchmark for pupils to find out their difficulties in applying the concept before they move on to the next step, which is generalization. In generalization, pupils are asked to generalize the topic they have learned in their own language or words.

After going through these steps, pupils will be faced with the real problem in the application.

Application is the step for pupils to apply what they have learned to real-world problems. I packaged this step into a group activity so that discussion and collaboration emerged between pupils in solving problems. I also have to make standarts in doing group activity and rubrics for participation in group activity and show these things to pupils before group activity starts.

I will divide the class into three groups, and each group will get a work basket with their respective group name on the handle. In this work basket there are problem on manila paper that pupils must work on as well as stationery that pupils can use. This is my way to attracting pupils' attention in group discussion, making pupils take responsibility for their work to complete.

The time given to pupils to work is 7 minutes. After the pupils have finished their work, it continues with presentations from each group. I will assess all activities starting from the pupils discussion process to presentations based on the rubric that I have shown to the pupils. I will then show the results of this assessment after the group activity ends. This is the application section in my lesson plan looks like.

The fourth part of my lesson plan is evaluation. In this part, I make 5 questions regarding to the topic. Pupils must work on these questions within 10 minutes without opening the book or asking anyone. The results of the pupils' work will then be assessed to find out how many pupils got a score of 80% or above and below. This part will also determine whether in the next class the topic studied today should be repeated or not. This is the questions that I prepared for the evaluation.

The last part is assignment. As the name suggests, I will give assignment for pupils to work at home, submitted and discussed in the next class. This is the assignment that I prepared in my lesson plan.

And that's the lesson plan and learning materials that I prepared and designed to teach in class later. My lesson plan and other instruments are in the link below.
